Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition that can result in extreme mood swings. Mood swings can include both a mania or hypomania phase (“emotional high” phase), as well as depression (“emotional low” phase). Those suffering from the mania phase may feel a sense of euphoria and become incredibly energetic or irritable. When somebody is suffering from the depression phase, they may experience hopelessness and sadness, as well as a lack of interest in most activities. This can affect things like sleep, activity, and energy and even impair one’s ability to think clearly and make decisions.
Episodes of mood swings vary from rare occurrences to multiple times a year. Moreover, these mood episodes vary in intensity, and they may not necessarily make sense. Bipolar patients have commonly reported increased activity, elevated mood, and decreased need for sleep as warning signs of mania, depressive mood, loss of interest in people and activities, and thoughts of death and suicide as early warning signs of depression.
Even though bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, it is possible for one to manage their mood swings and symptoms by adhering to a treatment plan formulated in therapy. With an effective treatment plan, it is possible for somebody suffering from bipolar disorder to regain control of their life.
